What to watch

The noise changed the winner. With honest receptors (5% noise per reading), the green run-and-tumbler that won v1 dies in every world — its tick-to-tick comparison sits below the noise floor. Naive temporal differencing is fragile.

Teal guys are Jason’s two nostrils, 120° apart on the rim: steer toward the stronger side, every tick. Single readings are often wrong — but steering errors average out while the body keeps moving. Across six worlds: 30/60 alive; nothing without nostrils survived anywhere.

The orange whale runs the same nostrils on a body 3× wider — a ~6µm baseline reads ~24% contrast against 5% noise: near noise-proof direction. It matches the lean swimmers’ survival while paying the full fat tax, and its survivors are the richest animals in the pond. Size buys senses.

Caveat, honestly: real E. coli integrates its nose over many ticks; a smoothed temporal comparer would fight back. For evolution we don’t pick — the body offers both nostril inputs and the genome wires what pays.
